A village with one of the highest standards of living in Languedoc
Saint-Clément-de-Rivière has 5,218 inhabitants and is located north of Montpellier, in the Grand Pic Saint-Loup. In 2015, the municipality had the highest average income per household in Languedoc-Roussillon among the communes of 2,000 to 10,000 inhabitants, a highly sought after residential setting. In 2018, there were 2,405 units in the housing stock, of which 91.4% were main residences and 73.5% were single homes, compared to 26.3% of apartments : a largely pavilion profile, without dense tourist accommodation. Integrated into Montpellier's agglomeration, the commune experienced a demographic explosion in the second half of the 20th century, with its population increasing by thirty in 50 years.

Saint-Clément, two centuries to feed Montpellier
The history of the village is linked to the Saint-Clément waterworks, built to supply Montpellier with water : the works, carried by engineer Henri Pitot, began in 1753 and ended in 1766, bringing 25 litres of water per second to the city. Extended to the Lez spring in the early 20th century, damaged by the floods of 1933, it remains used until the 1970s; an underground plant takes over from 1981 with an estimated capacity of 2,000 litres per second. The village has five health facilities : the Aurores Clinic, Dr.Ster's Clinic, the Saint-Clément Clinic, the Pic Saint-Loup Clinic and the Lironde Clinic. This is a rare speciality for a commune of this size, which makes it a practical basis for a medical appointment or a stay in the area.

The name Saint-Clément first appeared in 1109; the municipality takes its present name, Saint-Clément-de-Rivière, in 1985. Excavations carried out in 1977 and 1978 revealed traces of prehistoric occupation dating back to 2,300 B.C., at the now extinct Hill Cave. In 1276, the parish combined with eight other nearby parishes to support the Republic of Montferrand, an organization that already practised universal suffrage to elect its mayors and councillors, including for women. The architect François Spoerry designed the current "heart of the village". Since 1966, the municipality has also hosted the headquarters of Fata Morgana Publishing, a publishing house specializing in literature and art. For the races, two shopping centres are located in the commune, the Boulidou and Trifontaine, next to the market and the Squirrel Park. The municipality has 605 establishments, of which 26.9 per cent are specialized, scientific and technical, or 163 out of the total. The population is rather old : in 2018, 39.2% of the population were over 60, compared to 27.5% across the department.
