Restinclières, between Montpellier and Nîmes
Restinclières, in a landscape of dry garrigues peculiar to this part of the Herault, is located halfway between Montpellier, 18 kilometers to the southwest, and Nîmes, 30 kilometers to the northeast. The municipality, which brings together 2,612 inhabitants over 6.3 square kilometres, forms with its neighbour an urban continuity recognized as the urban unit of Beaulieu, a status which distinguishes it from the purely rural villages of the area. Restinclières has seen a sharp increase in its population since 1968.
Restincle, a resin chewed like gum
The name of the village would come from the restincle, or lentisque, a Mediterranean shrub whose aromatic resin served as chewing gum during antiquity, long before the invention of modern chewing gums. The plant would have been cultivated here for this use, before giving its name to the village that developed around it. It is a rare toponymic origin, very different from those based on a name of saint or lord, and which directly links the village to the garrigue that still surrounds it today.
Lords of Toiras to a basketball player
In the 12th century, the estate belonged to Pierre de Castries, vassal of the Count of Toulouse, before the seigneury later passed to Jacques and Rollin de Saint-Bonnet de Toiras, brothers of the Marshal of France Toiras, who died in 1636. It is a line that has left its mark in several villages in the region, between military garrisons and local nobility titles. Viticulture remains the agricultural orientation of the commune, with 9 farms in 2020, compared with 18 in 1988, on a used agricultural area of 168 hectares.
The Romanesque church of Saint-Césaire
The church, built in the 12th century and dedicated to Saint Césaire, bishop of Arles honored in the region from the 6th century, was enlarged in the 14th and 15th centuries and then fortified during the wars of religion. It has thus become the seat of an archpriested grouping about fifteen parishes in the vicinity, an important religious role for a village of this size. The extraction of limestone, the vine and the olive grove have for a long time brought the land to life around the village, before the trade and transport sector became the first local employer, with 41 of the 185 establishments registered in the municipality. Two green spaces, Henri Julian Square and La Roselière Park, now complement the village's living environment.
