A village between pond and Cevennes
Mudaison has 3,009 inhabitants on 8.1 square kilometres, 12 kilometres east of Montpellier. The village is located in the heart of the Petite Camargue, between the golden pond in the south and the Cevennes in the north, and is part of the community of agglomeration of the Gold Country. His name would come from Latin, a post office relay, even if the hypothesis of an ancient relay on a Roman way is no longer retained by historians.
25 minutes to the Petite Camargue
From the accommodation, Mudaison meets in 23.5 kilometers, for about 25 minutes of road, in fluid circulation. The commune touches Saint-Brès, where archaeological excavations common to both villages have discovered a neolithic site.
A village searched from Neolithic
Work on the high-speed line allowed us to search the site of Pascale and Berange, between Mudaison and Saint-Brès, occupied between 2800 and 2400 B.C.E. : defensive ditches, earth and wood constructions, grain storage area. Near the present church, other excavations revealed a habitat of the Chalcolithic, then traces of Carolingian settlement in the 9th and 10th centuries. The medieval village was surrounded by a wall of square enclosure, whose northeast corner corresponded to the church of St. The former presbytery, rue de la Halle, inscribed in the historical monuments, preserves the oldest elements of the village building.
The Bosc castle and the rest of Germaine Richier
The Bosc Castle, a 19th-century neo-Renaissance building, completes the village's heritage with the Sainte-Aciscle-et-Sainte-Victoire church, rebuilt in the Baroque style around 1770. sculptress Germaine Richier sits at Mudaison Communal Cemetery, alongside Senator and MP Camille Reboul.
A village that kept its agriculture
The number of farms based in Mudaison increased from 76 in the 1988 census to 17 in 2020, a decline comparable to that observed in the rest of the department. The agricultural area used remained relatively stable, from 568 hectares in 1988 to 1,099 hectares in 2020. In economic terms, 349 establishments are located in the municipality, 82 of which are in manufacturing, well above the departmental average. At the beginning of the 12th century, an act already mentioned the village under the names Mudazon and Mutationibus. The senator and MP Camille Reboul, who was buried as Germaine Richier in the communal cemetery, was born in 1869 and died in 1939. The excavations carried out in the 2010s, during the high-speed construction of the Nîmes and Montpellier bypass, documented several of these successive periods of occupation, from Neolithic to the high Middle Ages.
