A village of ponds near Montpellier
Perols has 9,615 inhabitants in 8.7 square kilometres, southeast of Montpellier. The municipality touches Lattes, Mauguio and Palavas-les-Flots, and its territory is bordered by protected wetlands : the golden pond, the Palavasian ponds and the Petite Camargue, classified Natura 2000 areas. Pérols remains a coastal village in its own sense, even if its ancient centre is in retreat from the sea.
17 minutes for the Arena and major events
The journey from the accommodation is 16.6 kilometers, for about 17 minutes by car, in fluid traffic. Pérols hosts the Arena Sud de France and the Parc des Expositions de Montpellier, two facilities that attract concerts, fairs and sporting events all year round. The municipality was also chosen for the future MHSC stadium on the Ode à la Mer site.
In tram to the center, without taking back the car
Since April 2012, line 3 of the tram serves Pérols on four stations : EcoPôle, Parc Expo, Pérols-Centre and Pérols-Étang de l'Or, its terminus. A bus line, number 28 of the Tam network, completes the service from north to south of the village. The Pérols market is home to the city centre, and the municipal cooperative cellar now houses the Pérolian communal museum.
Ponds, harbour and swimming pool for a break
The territory of Pérols retains a marina and two ponds, the Salins pond and the Pérols pond, accessible from the village. The mental pool completes the offer for a break before returning to the road.
German twinning and a stadium project
Perols has been paired since 1992 with Flörsheim am Main, a municipality in the suburbs of Frankfurt, known for its wine. The name of the village would come from the Latin pirum, a place planted with pear trees. The church of the Transfiguration-du-Seigneur-et-Saint-Sixte II, whose construction began in 1863, has since the post-war period carried a statue of the Virgin on its bell tower, in tribute to the inhabitants spared by the allied bombings on the neighbouring airfield. In 2021, the municipality also announced the creation of a sports museum, the Louis Nicollin Museum, in the future compound of the MHSC football club. In economic terms, 1,506 establishments are located in Pérols, of which 391 are in commerce, transport and accommodation-restoration. The municipality is a member of the Union of French Taurine Cities and the Union of Port Cities of Occitanie, two networks that reflect its coastal and taurine identity. The shaver Jacky Simeon, author of several books on the Camargue race, is a figure linked to the village, in the image of his lasting attachment to the taurine traditions of the coastal plain.
