Why sleep in Saint-Jean-de-Védas to visit Montpellier
Montpellier has 310,240 inhabitants in 2023 and has never stopped growing since 1945, a rare case among French cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. With 70,000 students, or 21% of the population, the city lives all year round. Reversal of this dynamism : a dense center, where to move and park requires patience.
Saint-Jean-de-Védas touches the city by the southwest. The accommodation is 5.9 km from the centre, 13 minutes by car, but especially about 7 minutes walk from the tram line 2. We sleep in a quieter town, leave the car parked for free, and we reach the ECUson in tram. It is a simple answer to the question "where to sleep near Montpellier" when you want to enjoy the centre without suffering the traffic.
The tram line 2 : from the house door to the Comedy
Line 2 is the driving thread of the stay. From Saint-Jean-de-Védas, it crosses Sabines and the Croix-d-Argent district, a south-west sector in full development around the Ovalie area, before joining the Gare Saint-Roch. The district of the station is the key point of Montpellieran transport : the four tram lines cross, with more than half of the bus lines of the metropolis.
Beyond, Comédie and Corum stops drop directly on the edge of the historic centre. For an evening in the city, it changes everything : no room to look for near the ECUson, no flying back. The next day, the car is still there, in blue zone at 100 meters or on free parking without limit of duration at 200 meters from the accommodation.
Cars, motorways and railway stations : arrival without detour
Montpellier is bordered by A9 and A709. The A709 has five outings for the city, including Montpellier Sud-Ouest, which specifically serves Saint-Jean-de-Védas. The houses are therefore at the exit of the motorway, without crossing the agglomeration. Between Baillargues and Saint-Jean-de-Védas, the A709 is free and serves as a ring road for the inhabitants of the metropolis : plan to slow down between 8am and 9am, 12am and 2pm, then 5pm and 7pm.
By train, two stations serve the city : Montpellier Saint-Roch, right in the centre, and Montpellier-Sud-de-France. Arriving at Saint-Roch allows you to climb directly on line 2 until Saint-Jean-de-Védas. The arrival is done in autonomy by key box, between 5pm and 11pm, which leaves some margin after a journey at the end of the day.
CUSSON and its monuments, on foot from the tram
The Montpellier-Centre district consists of ECUson, the historic centre whose shape resembles an ancient ecu. It includes the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Law and the former Imperial Grand High School, now Joffre High School, enrolled in historical monuments (ref. Mérimée PA00103530). The citadel built in the early seventeenth century at the foot of the centre has been home to this high school since 1947.
Several historical monuments, identified by their Mérimée reference, mark a half-day walk:
- The Peyrou Gate - Arc de Triomphe (PA00103609), major landmark of the ancient centre.
- The Garden of Plants (PA00103773), protected park in the same way as buildings.
- La Fontaine des Trois Graces (PA00103542) and the Fountain of the Prefecture (PA00103541), two central protected fountains.
- The Castellane Halles (PA34000022), both protected monument and covered market.
- Hotel des Trésoriers de France (PA00103592) and the Tower of the Babote (PA00103606), two other witnesses of the ancient city.
- The Saint-Eloi Column, the Convent of the Ursulines and Hotel de CastanFor anyone who wants to extend the loop.
The Languedoc Museum, the Carré Sainte-Anne, the medieval Mikvé and the Pharmacy and Chapel of Mercy complete the course. The history of the city is read in these stones : seigneury given in 985 to a certain Guilhem, passed to the crown of Aragon, bought in 1349 by Philip VI of Valois, then definitively attached to the kingdom of France in 1383.
Districts, parks and markets outside the historic centre
Around the ECUson, neighborhoods quickly change their faces. Antigone, Fine Arts, Buttonnet, Figuerolles and Arceaux extend the centre. On the left bank of the Lez, Port-Marianne is a recent neighborhood, served by three tram lines, with its water mirror and the Jacques Coeur basin. Further on, Odysseum, a leisure centre served by line 1, brings together Planet Ocean Montpellier's planetarium aquarium, a rink and a multiplex.
To breathe, the Domaine de Méric, the Aiguelongue Park and the gardens of the Champ de Mars offer green breaks. On the market side, there are plenty of landmarks : the Halles Castellane, the Arceaux market, the Aubes peasant market, the Halles Jacques Coeur or the flea and brocante market. Fill the basket before you go home to cook. And if the desire for sea presents itself, the Mediterranean is only 11.1 kilometers from Montpellier.
