A wine village at the foot of the causse of Aumelas
Vendémian has 1,149 inhabitants in a 16.9-square-kilometre territory in the centre of the Hérault department, some 30 kilometres from Montpellier. The village is served by the A75 motorway, exit 57 towards Clermont-l-Hérault, and by the A750, exit 59 towards Gignac, which places it at the hinge between the vineyard plain and the first reliefs of the causse.
The communal territory covers two Natura 2000 sites : the Moure and Cause Mountain of Aumelas, 20% of which is covered by Mediterranean lawns maintained by pastoralism, and the Moure and Aumelas scrublands. The first site is home to seven species of bats, three of which are of community interest; the second, a breeding pair of Bonelli eagles, a rare species in France, and a feeding zone for the royal eagle.
Agriculture, in sharp decline since 1988
In 2020, there were still 43 farms based in the municipality, compared to 71 in 1988, a decrease of 39% over 32 years, a trend comparable to that observed throughout the department. The agricultural area used followed the same path, from 1,831 hectares in 1988 to 391 hectares in 2020. Nevertheless, the vineyard remains the mark of the landscape around the village.
From Saint-Jean-de-Védas, it takes 31.8 kilometres and about 36 minutes to reach Vendémian. The village is located in the same area as Gignac, Popian, Plaissan and Saint-Pargoire, which makes it possible to organize a loop in the vineyard rather than an isolated round trip.
St Peter's church and medieval enclosure
The church of Saint-Pierre de Vendémian, registered as historical monuments in 1987, marks the centre of the village. Around, the medieval enclosure, the Notre Dame Gate and the tower of the bell tower recall the ancient fortified village.
The Guirale washhouse and the Horts well complete the village's more modest heritage, which witnessed daily use of water before the arrival of the modern network. On 2 October 2009, more than a thousand hectares of tillage and garrigues burned on the lands of the commune, a reminder of the dry climate that also shapes this landscape.
A village economy, between trade and vineyards
Vendémian has 75 active establishments, 23 of which are in wholesale and retail trade, transport, accommodation and catering, or 30.7 per cent of the total, above the departmental average of 28 per cent. The "Savours of the Country" market remains the regular opportunity to find local producers, in a village that has long lived almost exclusively in wine-growing, before the number of farms declines sharply during successive agricultural censuses.

- A vineyard and nature outing : Vendémian combines well with Gignac or the causse of Aumelas for a full day.

- A trip to the center of the Hérault Access via A75 or A750 remains direct from the village.
In the commune, the church Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Marcellin is protected as historical monuments (ref. Mérimée PA00103743), a stop to be planned between two walks in the vineyards.
