An agricultural village between Lunel and the Golden Pond
Saint-Just has 3,293 inhabitants on only 6.2 square kilometres, one of the smallest municipalities in the area. It is adjacent to Lunel in the south, is 20 kilometers by flight from Montpellier, 28 kilometers south-west of Nîmes and 11 kilometers from La Grande-Motte and the Mediterranean coast. The territory remains agricultural, marked by the route of the ancient Roman cadastre, whose salinity cami, the salt road, still crosses the northern part of the commune.
The name of the village appeared in the texts as early as 1202 : Raymond de Saint-Just then gave to the seigneur of Lunel certain rights of justice and finance on the market of Lunel, and received in exchange, in fief, the place of Saint-Just with its fortresses. Of these medieval defenses, today there remains only an old wall, with traces of two ancient doors, as well as the name of a farm always called "The Castle".
Thirty-two minutes to Lunel Country
From the accommodation, the road measures 30.3 kilometres and runs in 32 minutes. Saint-Just is a member of Lunel Agglo, an inter-municipal settlement established in 2024. In 2021, the municipality had 1,396 dwellings, compared with 1,316 in 2016 and 1,153 in 2011 : steady growth, but with only 1.7% of secondary residences, far from the 17.8% of the department. It is a village where people live, not a resort-oriented municipality.
Tauromachi traditions well rooted
Bulls were certified in Saint-Just in 1891, supplied at the time by a Cailar breeder. The tradition continues today through the votive festival, which starts on the first Sunday of August and continues on five or six following Sundays, with themed days and lunches in the meadows, respecting the local Camargue culture.
This tradition shared with neighbouring villages remains alive despite the small size of the municipality : 242 settlements were registered at the end of 2019, of which nearly a quarter were in trade, transport and catering, a proportion close to the department's average.
The Golden Pond and the site of St. Peter's Obilion
The Natura 2000 site of the Mauguio pond, also known as the Golden Pond, borders the communal territory on its southern part. This lagoon, which communicates with the sea by a grau connected to the port of Carnon, has a wide variety of environments, between dune system and brackish areas, and a recognized birding interest. In the commune, the site of Saint-Pierre d'Obilion, mentioned in a text from the year 896, is considered the historic and original site of the village, before the grouping of the inhabitants into a "Catum San Justi" around 1173.
For whom this base makes sense
- A desire for a true Hérault village : Saint-Just remains inhabited all year round, away from the tourist flows of the coast.
- A discovery of the Camargua traditions outside Saint-Jean-de-Védas, if the stay falls in August during the votive feast.
- A step combined with Lunel : the two municipalities are adjoining, which simplifies a shopping outing or market in addition to the visit of the village.
